We recognise the importance of osteoarthritis in the canine population. Discussion of osteoarthritis management requires time spent determining the needs of the individual case and the clients. In our consultations we have the time to educate clients on conservative management options. We believe that the best way to optimise quality of life is to work alongside veterinary surgeons in general practice to develop treatment plans with flexibility over time as the disease progresses and patient needs change.
In terms of surgical management of osteoarthritis, we recognise that the vast majority of osteoarthritis in dogs is secondary to another condition, including hip and elbow dysplasia , cruciate disease, patellar luxation and osteochondrosis. We have surgical treatments for all of these conditions. To improve dorsal acetabular coverage of the femoral head in immature patients with hip dysplasia we are able to perform juvenile pubic symphysiodesis or double pelvic osteotomy. For dogs with elbow dysplasia we offer surgical options including arthroscopy and dynamic ulnar osteotomy. For cruciate disease we offer surgical stabilisation using a number of techniques, most frequently TPLO. For patellar luxation we offer a comprehensive approach to ensure a minimal risk of re-luxation. For osteochondrosis we perform osteochondral autografting or synthetic resurfacing.
We also offer a joint replacement clinic for patients with end-stage osteoarthritis (among other joint conditions necessitating salvage) run predominantly by Harry, who has a wealth of experience in the field of joint replacement.
