During the past 15 years our understanding of patellar luxation has undergone a paradigm shift. We now recognise the patella as an innocent bystander within a luxating quadriceps mechanism, and we look to the bony deformities in the femur and tibia in order to restore normal tracking of the patella within the trochlear groove*. In the majority of cases we will perform groove deepening (rectangular block recession trochleoplasty) and tibial tuberosity transposition to realign the quadriceps mechanism where appropriate. However, in those cases where deformity correction is required, we also have experience with femoral and tibial deformity correction using CT 3D printed guides and locking plate technology or interlocking nailing in order to minimise the risk of patellar reluxation. We reported the first case of patellar luxation addressed through femoral deformity correction and fixation using an interlocking nail†.
Our patellar luxation surgeries are fixed-price, including the consultation, pre-operative radiography, surgery, one night’s hospitalisation and a re-examination (including radiographs if necessary) at 4 weeks following surgery. Complications are uncommon following patellar luxation surgery but an occasional complication is inevitable.
