In 2008 he started on the route toward specialisation in small animal surgery with an internship followed by a residency in orthopaedics at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists (SCVS), a large multi-disciplinary referral centre in Hampshire. After making a major contribution towards the establishment and growth of the orthopaedic referral service at SCVS Phil spent several busy years working as lead orthopaedic surgeon at Cornwall Veterinary Referrals.

Phil holds the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (General Small Animal Surgery) and the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics). Phil has published widely, including frequent articles in the general veterinary press, peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals and as co-author of the 2nd Edition of Feline Orthopaedics (CRC Press), and is a regular presenter of continuing professional development for general practitioners on a wide range of small animal orthopaedic subjects. His special interests include feline orthopaedics, and management of complex fractures and angular limb deformities. He is also keen to optimise outcomes for cases with more routine joint diseases such as patellar luxation, cranial cruciate ligament disease and hip and elbow dysplasia.
